Alpha is part of the Jericho Shire ('Astride the Great Divide') which is one of the largest cattle producing shires in Queensland. Cattle population fluctuates from 180,000 head in drought to 240,000 in good seasons. Alpha is well serviced by many small businesses including - Grocery Store, Hairdresser, Butcher, Bakery, Craft Shop, Newsagency, Cafe, Hotel/Motel, Caravan and Villa Park, Store, Service Station and Workshop, Post Office, Sawmill, Metal Fabrication, Rural Merchandise Business, Bank of Queensland and ANZ. Alpha has a 25m Swimming Pool open during the summer, a Golf Course and Tennis Courts. The local Rodeo Club hold an annual campdraft each March; with the Senior Rugby League Football Club hosting a Bullmania each February.

The Shire of Jericho covers 21,877 square kilometres with the total population of 1103 (2002 ABS). The township of Alpha services the district and travellers with many small businesses and facilities such as the hospital, day care and school.
